Ah, the sweet smell of home![break][break]

Not quite actual home, of course - that would be Mistralton. He wasn't there for long after his school years and had plenty of issues with the place, and then Sinnoh became a "home" in the sense that he sure did live there... but Fortree was home, in the homely way. For starters, there were no bad memories. It felt funny that the most recent place he lived, in a way, was the most nostalgic.[break][break]

When off work he usually went for a jog on one of the local routes, or if he could assure he had the whole day off he might head to Slateport beach, or otherwise sightsee somewhere else. Hoenn was the kind of place where you could live there for five years and still find something, somewhere to explore - some little island, some craggy cliff.[break][break]

Today wasn't quite a thing he'd discovered, but a noise - the sound of a battle, perhaps? Just a bit off of the beaten trail, Pace could hear the unmistakable sounds of pokémon. He didn't mean to intrude, but pokémon going off like that were only ever involved in a fight, or perhaps some kind of training - if it involved trainers, he could make a new friend; and if it were wild pokémon causing a ruckus, then he could settle it, ranger-style.[break][break]

Through a particularly grassy patch, he spotted a human-shaped figure in the distance. He was well aware that grabbing or spooking randos through foliage, a la Percival Munn , was something that generally made people annoyed, so instead he made his presence known with a quick call.[break][break]

"Hey there! Just training, or you need a hand?"[break][break]

He wasn't in uniform, but the ranger training didn't go away so easily.

They’d stuck a claim in clearing where the treetops stretched thin, providing a generous window – and a welcoming gateway – to the sky.[break][break]

Angelo’s boot kicks at the campfire on the ground, embers dying in the dirt like dwindling stars as he snuffs out the remains of his nightly stay. Despite footsteps leading him around the soil in which he’d tread with purpose, packing away, he’s in no hurry to move along. [break][break]

Neither, it seemed, are his Salamence. [break][break]

Close by, sunning himself over a morning warmed rock, Eltanin watches through narrowed eyes as Mirage sticks her nose in a large pile of leaves that are conspicuously trembling. Their hatchling, Scout, pops out to playfully attack her mother’s long neck while she feigns surprise. [break][break]

Within the skies, Spitfire and Hellcat weave around one another with menacing snarls. Their spikes bristling as bladed wings threaten to brush, their scales glistening cobalt in the sunrays and teeth bared in a menacing display. [break][break]

Both hotheads, those two. But Angelo trusts they wouldn’t do one another harm, not with the reminder of his presence punctuating the air. [break][break]

It comes in the form of a whistle passing between his lips, a tune of his own making as he busies himself rolling maps within rough, calloused fingertips. Squaring the incomplete sketches and charts for later, some another day. [break][break]

Their visitor is announced by the low, alerting growl from deep within Eltanin’s chest. Angelo shoots his dragon a look, silence settles. [break][break]

“Something like that,” he chuckles in response, eyes pointing briefly skyward as the Salamence continue their spirited dance. “Don’t worry about the noise, they just like to be heard.” [break][break]

As the man approaching their campsite becomes clearer and clearer, his blue gaze falls back to him, narrowed in contemplation. Angelo had met a lot of people, mostly in passing as his time as a courier. But whereas before he’d brush the tingle of faint recognition aside, these days, things were different. [break][break]

“Have we met before?”

Across every possible multiverse, Pace wasn't sure there was a single version of himself that didn't love the sky. Even now, with the trees circled around, the sky called to him like a siren. He's distracted by the view for just a moment as the trainer replies, and it fills his head with memories of being young. Staring up at that same sky for hours, wishing he could be up there. Was it escapism from a relatively shitty childhood? Partially. But mostly it was just childlike wonder that never left.[break][break]

The Salamence above, locked in their dragon dance - pardon the pun - are stunningly beautiful. Pace hadn't had too many encounters with dragon types aside from his own baby, considering their general rarity and his fondness for birds instead, so seeing so many of them in the area is pretty breath-taking. Even when one of them growls - if only for a moment until silenced - at Pace's intrusion.[break][break]

"It's fine, they're allowed to be as noisy as they want." It wasn't as if Pace was going to argue with a two-hundred pound dragon, after all.[break][break]

He takes a moment, then, to search the stranger's face - or perhaps not so strange, after all.
"Oh-! You've done work with the rangers, right? I recognise you from meetings, I'm sure. I'm Pace Mahmoud" He holds out a hand, greets him with that signature sunshine smile.

A wry smile flickers across his features, an eyebrow rising in tandem. “You think they’d stop even if they weren’t?” [break][break]

Because there were few creatures could tell a dragon what to do. If they wanted to bellow to the heavens, release glutaral roars of pride and fury and freedom, then they damn well would. [break][break]

Their obstinance was both magnificent and infuriating, at times. Angelo is rather fond of them for it. [break][break]

“Ah, yeah. That’ll be me. Angelo Vestri,” he introduces himself, sunshine smile meeting Angelo’s lazier, sly curl. “I’m the guy that tags along with the plane.” [break][break]

It’s only when hands clap together in a good-natured shake, fingers giving the stranger a firm squeeze, that the face and the voice clicks into place. Recognition flickers through bright blue eyes, his other hand rising to shake a finger at Pace Mahmoud.[break][break]

“Y’know what… I think I recognise you. Weren’t you hanging around when I was collecting those Castform with Amelia Livy?” [break][break]

He’d certainly heard the other man, anyway.

Pace catches the twinkle in Angelo's eye and throws one back, looking up and watching the dragon's sky dance above. Some of the most powerful pokémon in all of the regions were dragon types, and it showed in the Salamences' every movement. Their bodies and muscles flexed and contracted as they sailed the skies as easily as a boat took on the water. It made him smile to see such freedom in one of it's most divine form.[break][break]

"Angelo Vestri" He repeats, feels the gentle hand squeeze and squeezes back, then it clicks. "Right, the plane guy!" It's almost said with the excitement of a kid - flying. It had occupied Pace's mind since he was old enough to know how high the sky rose, how infinitely it stretched. In another life, perhaps, he'd not be far off of Angelo's expertise. To fly like a bird, to pilot a great machine who's only goal is conquering the air. It breathed life into him.[break][break]

He raises a brow and quirks up one side of his smile into a smirk.[break]
"Hanging around?" Pace laughs. "You make it sound like I was creeping about! But yeah, that would've been me. Lia and I are friends"[break][break]

Friends was a funny word for it, but it was the word that Pace used most freely. Friendship. Made things less complicated.[break][break]

"Dragon guy, I assume, then? Considering-" He gestures to the small school of dragons surrounding them "I have a few myself, y'know"[break][break]
